On May 15 of this year, I got a speeding ticket on Fort Bragg, and yes, I was hauling 'A'. 57 in a 40 is pretty bad, especially considering I was on leave on my way to pick up a 20'x20' awning for our Family Reunion which was coming that weekend. I had my Dad, Father-in-Law and Son-in-Law in the truck with me. That fast on Fort Bragg means I have to register for Driver Improvement Training within 90 days or I'll lose my driving privileges on post, which is problematic. Fast forward: the website was down, the phone tree support didn't work and the Military Police (who don't administer the Training or the website) were no help and the deadline passed. I finally got someone at the safety office to get me into a class. By the time it was all said and done, I was a day late. Called the MPs to find out if I was good, the soldier on the desk said 'yes' and I go on with my life and my job--which mostly consists of Retirement Services stuff, rehab on my ankle and 'pre-hab' on the shoulder I need fixed (more about that in a bit). I went to court for the ticket on August 8th, got it dropped down to 44 in a 40, $80 fine, and I had to complete some OTHER online training. A few weeks later, coming back on post after lunch, I get pinged coming through the gate. Turns out I'm NOT good. I'm the opposite of good. I'm freakin'-Lee-Harvey-Oswald. I get arrested. Handcuffs, fingerprints, mugshots. That was August 30. See there's this whole memorandum that has to be submitted through my chain of command, and then approved by the full-bird Colonel, the Garrison Commander. I submit that on 9/14/17, and a day later, I turn in the certificate from the Driver Improvement Training course that I completed. SIX WEEKS later, the Garrison Commander denies my request because--get this--I don't have any proof that I attended the training. And when I explain to the representative that they have a copy of my certificate in the packet, he tells me that 'that'll work, you just have to resubmit the packet then.' Me:'You already HAD the certificate.' Him:'And you have the original?' Me:'Of course!' ![]() Him:'Then scan it and bring the copy and the new packet to the Provost Marshall's Office (PMO) and that will start the process.' Me:'Is there someone else I can talk to?' The Normandy breakout only took 30 days!!!! How is THIS even possible???? So it only took 30 calendar days to get past zee Germans dug into some Roman-era hedgerows, but it takes half-again as long to get through the headquarters of XVIII Airborne Corps. Fortunately, my wife knows some people who know some people who decided that denying a packet on the basis of missing paperwork that wasn't actually missing, and taking 6 weeks to do it, is just jacked up, so.we'll see.
